You want to keep yourself healthy and happy during pregnancy -- after all, that means your baby is healthy and happy! Many moms do a good job researching nutrition, exercise, and other ways to keep themselves healthy. But emotional health can be trickier. Moms-to-be aren't sure how to keep themselves feeling great throughout the ups and downs that are so normal to pregnancy. This article will cover several tips to help you stay healthy -- and stay happy.
Eat and Move!
The basics of good pregnancy health are also the basics for feeling great during your pregnancy. A mom-to-be who is well-nourished will be able to handle pregnancy emotions with a great attitude. Everybody feels worse when they're not eating well, so watch this part of your lifestyle carefully.
During pregnancy you need to eat frequently. Your baby requires a lot of nutrition, so plan not just healthy meals, but healthy snacks. Don't feel like you have to eat huge meals and huge snacks -- the key is really eating high quality foods in the quantities that fill you up.
Shoot for getting around 80 grams of protein each day. Animal proteins, like milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, and meats, are ideal because they contain so many nutrients that are easy for your body to digest. Nuts are also great because they pack in protein, carbohydrate for energy, and fat for your baby's brain. Add in plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and you have a great basis for a healthy pregnancy. Drink plenty of water as well.
Also make sure you're moving regularly throughout the week. Pick a good pregnancy exercise book or DVD. Prenatal yoga or prenatal belly dance are both great choices -- they keep you moving and healthy, help you bond with your baby, and prepare your body for giving birth. Take regular walks or swims throughout the week, too. This keeps you feeling happy and gives you more energy.
Once you've taken care of these physical basics, make sure you're taking care of yourself emotionally. Are you giving yourself time for "just you" on a regular basis? Most moms-to-be are busy, but make a little time to relax during the week. Take a bath, read a novel, watch a good movie, or listen to a pregnancy relaxation audio. Having a little time for yourself on a regular basis gives you a more positive outlook on life.
You can also take time to focus on your baby. It can feel really hard to give your new baby the attention he or she needs, especially if you're also caring for other children or keeping up with a busy career. This is where things like prenatal yoga, or listening to a guided relaxation for a half hour every day can really help. Use these times to focus on your baby and connect.
You can also focus on your new baby as you prepare clothing, diapers, and baby gear. Let your imagination wander and dream about your little one! Many moms love the satisfaction of hunting up good deals via deal networks or thrifting -- and they especially love seeing the growing stash of baby supplies in preparation for their little one.
All of these strategies help you stay feeling your best -- not just physically, but also emotionally. A healthy, happy mom-to-be means a healthy, happy baby!
